Untitled (Mosques and Churches) was made in 2010 while I was completing the Terna Prize Affiliated Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. During my time in Rome, I traveled to Istanbul where the Islamic architecture and designs inspired me, particularly in contrast to the aesthetics of the churches and cathedrals that surrounded me in Rome. Untitled (Mosques and Churches) was done with ink and guache paint, along with collaged papers, and incorporates both the Corinthian columns and images from Rome along with the ceiling layout and patterns of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. I create my own imaginary landscape that brings together elements of both the East and the West by placing female figures that are interacting with different animals inside a space that is both Islamic and Christian.
