Liu Jin’s ‘Big Shanghai’ depicts one of his ‘Fallen Angel’s’ gripping onto a construction crane as if the structure is the last entity to catch him before he falls to the earth (and seemingly death). The immense tower in the background has plucked this angel straight out of the sky and caused him to tumble down to earth. The workers who are operating this construction crane appear immune to the angel’s fate, so driven are they by a path to urbanization. A sign hangs from the crane appealing for an innocent man who has been imprisoned for 32 years. Short
