Gao Feng has lived in Beijing for over a decade. Academically trained as a sculptor, Gao began his artistic career in the 1990s staging performances with many of China’s pioneer performance artists. As the artist’s interests developed, Gao Feng is now primarily focused on painting. His works often placed contemporary visual motifs alongside Chinese classical landscape imagery. By borrowing from these traditional landscapes, Gao seeks to establish a continuum with the rich artistic history of China as well as to reinterpret iconic visual artworks through a contemporary lens. Gao’s works have been included in major international exhibitions and collection across Asia, Europe and the U.S.

Artist statement
The subject matter of Gao Feng’s paintings stem from the artist’s fascination with bacteria, the smallest form of life. By infiltrating famous paintings from ancient Dynasties with bold, splashy images of viral bacteria, the artist creates his own science-fiction universe where the viruses symbolize the artist’s appropriation of Chinese history. With these colorful alterations, he redefines and modernizes our way of looking at the past.
