In place of the subject''s eyes is a pair of glasses, an implement designed to improve their vision. The instrument to their right is a speculum, which allows its user to see inside an unseeable place. Its form is designed to complement the shape of what it is holding open, which in this case has been removed. Without eyes, there is nothing to see. My drawings start with images of people and objects as real as I can make them, or as real as they appear to me. By manipulating elements that define their specific identity, I can reintroduce them as symbols that participate in a greater sense of identification. Showing only pieces and integrating them to form a partly-defined but believable picture mirrors the way we create individual and collective realities.
