Read this recent article about Roni Feldman - XOXO depicts an elaborate crowd of people hugging kissing, laughing, and cheering. Mostly out of love and joy, but also pain and comfort. The complex imagery bonds everyone together into a unified composition, but the colors abstract and separate them. The ethereally blurred airbrushed paint vacillates between individual and crowd, abstraction and representation, while the subjects smile between utopia and dystopia. The title, XOXO, refers to the closing of a letter between lovers or friends, but also recalls variables in a mathematical formula. Indeed, my figures function like variables or data that can be reassembled towards a composition.
