Extending the language of abstraction, her practice focuses on making through the creation of experimental mechanisms to manipulate the core ingredients and structures associated with the traditions of painting. Using this mechanical method of painting, she seeks to remove the artist from the gesture and emotion of painting, allowing her mediums to speak for themselves. Orderly, mathematical systems form the framework of her work, but she thinks of painting as an event - one that is as much concerned with the process of its emergence as it is with the final outcome. Material, machine and artist each take their turn in leading or resisting the outcome and it is a sensitivity to this push and pull that drives the work. As the paint is poured, traversing the canvas under the forces of gravity, a dialogue between art and science is created as the paint ebbs and flows in a single linear stroke. As the work is repeatedly moved from horizontal to vertical positions it adapts and transforms over time, becoming a collaboration between her own desires and the unpredictable tendencies of her materials. In some instances, mechanisms are stacked on top of each other which allow tilting canvases above to paint subsequent canvases beneath, challenging the idea of authorship within the work. The predictable is balanced with the unforeseen, allowing the completed work to become a reflection of mankind’s unique perception of time and our desire to plan and control unknown futures. Rather than artificially aiming for permanence through painting, the final paintings highlight the event and process of making, and become a bi-product of a larger scheme. They act as documentation, objects and commodities - what can be seen as the aftermath of the performative work that took place earlier in the studio.
Sarah Emily Porter is a painter and sculptor living and working in London. Extending the language of abstraction, her practice focuses on making through the development of experimental machinery and mathematical systems to manipulate the core ingredients and structures associated with the traditions of painting. Porter studied Architectural History at Durham University (2005-2008), before attending the Slade Summer School (2014) and Chelsea College of Arts, London (2016) to complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Art. Alongside her painting practice she runs the design studio, Porter + Trundle. She has won numerous accolades for her work which include winning New Ashgate Rising Stars Award 2021, the Richard Seager Annual Arts Award 2019, the London Festival of Architecture City Benches Competition 2019 and the Broomhill National Sculpture Prize 2018. She has also been shortlisted for the Jackson’s Open Painting Prize 2018, Signature Art Prize 2018, and Annex Collection Acquisition Award 2016. In addition, she was awarded National Lottery/Arts Council England funding to develop her creative practice in 2021, she was selected as an artist in residence at Bankside Hotel 2020, was invited to be the visiting artist at the NLCS Jeju Arts Festival in South Korea 2019 and in 2018 was awarded a Project Residency at the Griffin Gallery to work with the chemists at ColArts. She has work in private collections across the world, has exhibited internationally and has been recognized for her work in numerous publications including Wallpaper*, Deezen and Architects’ Journal.

Once your artwork is made by our printer, it must be allowed to outgas for 24 hours before being framed and/or shipped. ** Please note that we employ professional framers, shippers and handlers on all orders and only handle our prints with white gloves. While occasional damage by USPS or FedEx in transit is out of our control, we are happy to work with you to resolve any damage that does occur. However, damage in transit is relatively rare.
As our prints are custom made to order according to your preferences, all of our prints are final sale and non-returnable. We guarantee the quality of our prints, so if your order was shipped with a defect or arrived damaged, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
ArtStar does not accept returns. Works damaged in transit may be exchanged on a case by case basis within 30 days of arrival. Please email us as soon as you receive the damaged work at email@example.com. Please do not open your artwork yourself. It is very delicate and difficult to get back in the packaging without damage. Please let a trained framer open the artwork. We do not take back artwork damaged by the customer.
