STOP LIGHT COURT 2
Hong Kong has the most basketball courts of any city in the world. This bold claim is difficult to verify, but in his Hong Kong Basketball Court series, Austin Bell sets out to exhaustively showcase them all, whether by air or center court. Their endless stream of colorful designs cut through daunting vertical surroundings and give Hong Kong’s playgrounds of choice a distinctiveness no other city can match. At the same time, the courts’ omnipresence intertwines them into Hong Kong’s entrancing visual makeup. It may be impossible to affirm that Hong Kong has the most basketball courts of any city in the world, but Austin’s work proves it has the most intriguing ones.
AUSTIN BELLAustin Bell is a photographer from North Carolina who has shot over 2,400 basketball courts across the world, with specific focuses in Hong Kong, Puerto Rico and New York City. Austin captures them from all angles: aerially, through fences or at center court. The courts fascinate him because of their color, symmetry and ubiquity, becoming a unique lens to the places in which they are found. However, because of his terrible jump shot he prefers shooting photos to baskets.
