STAN SMITH

by KATE SCHELTER

STAN SMITH

In September 2014, I travelled to Paris to paint In Residence during fashion week. I worked on location, painted from life, and cataloged items found in situ. I approached my subject matter with a stylist's eye, isolating my subject matter within a white negative space to capture its iconography and essence of place. The Christian Louboutin heel and Stan Smith sneaker were inspired by what editors were wearing to shows.

KATE SCHELTER

Kate Schelter is a New York City based illustrator, creative director and stylist—owner of the luxury brand consultancy that bears her name—who is always armed with palette, paper and brushes on her travels. Taking a cue from her styling work, she is attracted to subject matters that she admires in real life and that she owns, like a red lipstick or an old pair of shoes, as well as objects found in nature.

Kate illustrated the book Gypset Travel (Assouline 2013). She paints commercial work for Vanity Fair, TOMS, One Kings Lane, Bonpoint, GRAFF, Romy & the Bunnies, BVLGARI, Victoria’s Secret, Architectural Digest, and Toyota, as well as private commissions. Original works are available at John Derian Company.

Kate holds a BA from Rhode Island School of Design and their European Honors Program in Rome, and lives with her husband Chris Schumacher, their daughter Charlotte, and their tiny dog, Bear.
