This is Zaria Forman’s first-ever silkscreen, making it an exceptional Collector’s Item. The source photograph was taken on a 2018 trip to Antarctica where Zaria was invited aboard a National Geographic Explorer voyage. Not receiving her drone permit in time, Zaria paired up with a videographer onboard and directed the shot from Lindblad Cove. To their delight, the sun came out and created beautiful contrasts between the deep dark waters and the iceberg above and below.

Silkscreens are believed to have originated in China as far back as 1000 years ago. Also known as silk-screening or serigraphy, silkscreen printing involves using a tightly- stretched mesh or screen (hence the name!). The first step is to mount the silkscreens over your chosen paper or canvas, with a separate screen for each color. Once the screens or stencils are in place, artists roll, press, sponge or squeegee their ink or paint over the silkscreens to leave a design.

An art form in its own right, creating a silkscreen is a painstaking process that is completed by highly-skilled craftsmen and can take months. Every silkscreen is made by hand, and each piece is unique. Slight variations are normal and part of what makes a silkscreen print special.
